How to use Akeeba

The Akeeba Social Login plugin allows users to connect their Joomla accounts to social media, including account creation and login process.

Users can link their social media account to the website. It works for Facebook, Google, GitHub, LinkedIn, Microsoft Account and Twitter.

Thanks to the Social login plugin user can easily log in with his social media account. In this tutorial, we will show how to configure the Facebook, Google and Twitter login.

What does it mean in practice? New users can register at the website using their social media account. It’s a much faster and easier process than the typical Joomla registration.

The Social login plugin is free to download and use. You can download it here.

Installation

The installation process is the same as for each Joomla extension.

Open your Joomla control panel. Go to -> Extensions -> Manage

Choose Upload Package file and choose the plugin package file from your drive.

If the installation was successful, you should see this view:

Now go to Plugins, search for “Social login” and see the list of installed plugins.

social-login-pluginsThe “System - Akeeba Social Login” plugin must be enabled. It is responsible for the social login system code loading and it’s used for rendering the login along with the buttons.

Login with Facebook

Let's start with Facebook integration. For this purpose, you need to enable and configure the “Akeeba Social Login - Facebook integration” plugin.

Let’s see available options:

You need to configure the plugin according to your needs.

The most important options here are: 

  • Facebook Application ID - Enter the App ID for your custom Facebook application here. This is required to enable social login with Facebook. You can create a Facebook App at https://developer.facebook.com/apps
  • Facebook Application Secret -  Enter the App secret for your custom application here. This is required to enable social login with Facebook. You can create a Facebook App at https://developer.facebook.com/apps

You need to use the Facebook Application ID and a Secret Key.

When everything is set you can click “Save”.

Let’s see the result on our demo website. The login looks now like this:

Let's see the example of Google Plug plugin configuration.

The "Akeeba Social Login - Google integration" plugin needs to be enabled. The configuration looks like this:

  • Google Client Secret - enter the Client Secret for your Google API project here. This is required to enable social login with Google. You can create a Google API project at https://console.developers.google.com/apis
